5 Questions Coaches Should Ask Athletes at the End of the Season
Whether you win or lose, the end of the season is a crucial time to reflect and learn about what well and what could be improved upon.
Every Coach should take time with each Athlete on their team to discuss these 5 questions.
The Athlete should have the opportunity to answer first, then the Coach should provide his/her perspective as well.
This creates a collaborative environment that’s conducive for learning for BOTH the Athlete and the Coach.
5 Questions to Ask at the End of the Season:
What went well this season? What can we celebrate? Try to name at least 3 specific things.
What could be improved upon? Again, try to name a few specific things.
How was our communication this year? Were we on the same page? Were we talking regularly? Where were there disconnects?
How would you rate your mental and physical health this season? Be sure to give separate ratings for mental health and physical health.
What’s one thing you’d like to focus on next year? This should be specific and not something general like “winning.” This is crucial to set the tone.
This exercise is crucial for player learning and development.
Coaches should also encourage players to take time away from training, practice, their sport, etc.
It’s important to give ourselves space and clarity, so that (1) our bodies can rest and (2) new insights have space to develop and come through.
